Brain Boosting Berry Smoothie

shana-tatum-bluerberry-smoothie-recipe.jpg

Blueberries enjoyed daily may increase brain activation in areas associated with memory and executive function. The antioxidants properties found in anthocyanin, the blue-pigmented compound, is also key to improved immune health.

Avocados are 75% monounsaturated fat unlike most other fruits that are mostly carbohydrates. They aid in absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Avocados are also high in tyrosine, a precursor to dopamine. This brain chemical encourages that “feel good” feeling.

Serving size: 8 oz. Yield: 3 servings

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups frozen blueberries

  • 1 cup pomegranate juice (or any berry juice without added sugar)

  • 1 cup ice cubes

  • 1 ripe banana

  • 1/2 avocado, peeled and pitted

Directions

Add all ingredients to a blender and pulse until combined and smooth. If the smoothie is too thick, add more juice or water to get the right consistency. If the smoothie is too thin, add more ice. Pour into glass and enjoy!
