About

Meet Shana

I am a registered dietitian nutritionist that follows a personalized functional nutrition approach.

Finding wellness through the power of food – balanced with good sleep, daily movement, stress reduction and meaningful relationships, I deeply believe optimal wellness and vitality can be realized. I also utilize testing to detect nutrient deficiencies as we develop a targeted plan for your health goals. Through this whole-health centered approach, my hope is to empower patients to step into and find their own healthy balance.

With the IFMCP designation (Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner), I am in a group of 1700 practitioners worldwide, and the only dietitian in Houston with this certification. I am a member of the Dietitians in Integrative and Functional Medicine Practice Group. This integrative and functional background permits me to pay particular attention to individualized and personalized care. I am especially interested in the relationship between mental health and dietary and lifestyle influences. Awareness of triggers and mediators combined with modifiable lifestyle factors can restore balance and prevent further cognitive decline.

Why and how I can uniquely help you?

I have had first-hand experience with auto-immune challenges. I once had gastrointestinal problems that kept me close to home and stressed to know where to find the nearest restroom was when I did leave the house. The rash on my face and on my scalp caused so much pain and self-doubt, I began to feel lonely and sad. I followed strict elimination diets to find food triggers and attempted to explain my strange food habits to friends and family. I rid our house of as many environmental toxins as I could to eliminate possible causes. I saw many doctors to better understand my symptoms but it did not improve. It took changing my diet to see that eggs, gluten, and nuts were my triggers. Once removed, I calmed my gut and the urgency passed. I did stool and micronutrient testing to understand the balance of my gut microbiome and vitamin deficiencies. I began including targeted probiotics and fermented foods daily. This produced even more benefits. I added meditation to address my stress and continued to see improvement in the balance of my gut bacteria and watched the psoriasis disappear. I became dedicated to daily movement to strengthen my immune system. My thoughts of sadness were replaced with joy and awe of the power of my body to heal.  All of these changes together gave me my health back. Results that changed my life. I have empathy for you when you say "I know something is not right, could it be my diet or my lifestyle?". I have been there, I understand. Let’s work together to uncover those clues.

hobbies

When not counseling clients toward their peak health and well-being,I can be found with friends and family enjoying community. Gardening, reading the latest on the mind and body connection and meditating are some of my favorite activities. I find seasonal cooking for my family a form of creative expression. As a mother to three boys, my weekends used to include soccer games and stinky socks. But now, with all boys out of the house, adjusting to an empty nest, my time is filled with seasonal and local cooking for one and reading the latest nutrition literature.
